Children in Canberra house fire likely dead before blaze: coroner

The local Kenyan community turned out for the funeral of Anne Muhoro and her children.

Two children found dead with their mother after a house fire in Bonner earlier this year were most likely dead when the blaze started, a preliminary coroner's report has found.

Anne Muhoro, 45, Ezvin Mugera, 8, and Furaha Muhoro, 5, were found dead at their home in February.

The family was originally from Kenya, and their deaths left the local community in shock.

The police investigation after the blaze focused on whether a third party had been involved in the fire.

A man was taken into custody at the time, but released without charge.

Wednesday's report said there was no evidence anyone else was involved.

The report by coroner Peter Morrison also said forensic pathologists were unable to determine the cause of death for either of the children.

But the report found their mother had died of the effects of the fire.

The findings also note the fire was not an accident, with several starting points, which police confirmed at the time.

Mr Morrison said he had ordered a full inquest brief of evidence be prepared ahead of any further inquiries.
