Children forced to run for cover as stray bullets fired by assassin in Drogheda feud

Kids out playing had to run for cover after stray bullets were fired by an assassin in an ongoing feud.

A man suspected of being linked to the dispute was lucky to have survived the gun attack in the Termon Abbey area of Drogheda, Co Louth on Thursday.

The hitman managed to blast the 24-year-old in the shoulder and chin but a number of shots penetrated through the back window of the silver Golf he was sitting in and are said to have narrowly missed youngsters nearby.

The injured male, who cannot be named as he is facing serious charges before the court, is believed to have been driving different cars recently in order to avoid being targeted.

The deadly turf war has seen more than 70 criminal incidents including a spate of shootings and brutal assaults.Speaking on LMFM radio yesterday Chief Supt Christy Mangan said: “There was little or no thought given to the children and adults who were in the area.” And when asked if someone could have been killed by a stray bullet, he added: “Yes when people decide to fire upon another person very indiscriminately without any other thought for any other person.”

Following the shooting, there were two other reports of a house on fire and a petrol bomb being thrown at a property.

Mr Mangan said: “At approximately 11.50pm, a mobile patrol that we had out in the Moneymore area discovered a house on fire. The house has been destroyed as a result of the fire.

“Within minutes then there was a suspected petrol bomb thrown at a house in Moneymore as well.”
