Police in Melbourne have charged two children over the alleged armed robbery and stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police said the girl was on Gallery Lane near Frankston's Bayside Centre shops in the city's south-east just after midnight when she was approached by three other children.

Officers believe the trio then demanded the girl hand over her mobile phone and personal items before stabbing her several times with "a sharp implement".

Nearby transit police officers arrested the three alleged attackers and the 11-year-old girl was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

A 14-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were charged with armed robbery and assault and will appear in a children's court at a later date.

Police said another 11-year-old girl was released pending summons.
