Child charged after 'stolen' mini-van crashes, two critically injured

The mini-van flipped about 7:00am on Wednesday, not far from where it was allegedly stolen.

Police have charged a 12-year-old boy who was allegedly driving a stolen mini-van that rolled in Townsville, leaving two 10-year-old boys in a critical condition.

A total of six children were in the van when it crashed about 7:00am on Wednesday in the suburb of Kirwan, police said.

Two 10-year-old boys sustained serious head injuries and are in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

A girl, 11, and three boys aged between 11 and 14 were also in the car. Two received minor injuries.

It is alleged the car was stolen from a nearby neighbourhood before the crash.

The alleged driver has been charged with seven offences including three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievously bodily harm and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter premises and commit indictable offence, receiving tainted property and driving a motor vehicle without a licence.

A 14-year-old boy will be dealt with under provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Two other youths have not been charged but are continuing to assist police with investigations.
