Children blown out to sea in inflatable toys warns Belfast Coastguard

A number of children have been blown out to sea in Northern Ireland in inflatable toys during the warm weather.

They were rescued by members of the helicopter, lifeboat and coastguard teams, including two small children in crisis at sea today.

The youngsters had been enjoying family days out in the sun when the incidents happened.

A spokesperson for the Belfast Coastguard said: "We have been very busy most of the afternoon with a number of incidents involving children being blown out to sea in inflatable toys.

"Helicopters, lifeboats and coastguard teams have been tasked - the incidents thankfully, have so far have had happy outcomes.

"Please remember the safest place for children to play with these death traps is in the back garden."

One search and rescue crew member said: "Inflatables are for the swimming pool only.

"They get blown offshore very quickly and it’s usually when they contain small children.

"Anyone who is concerned about people using inflatables on the coast should report it to Coastguard, in an emergency dial 999 and ask for Coastguard.

"There were two incidents like this today and there have been a few incidents each day around the coast."
