Children as young as 12 identified by police in investigation over a rise in antisocial behaviour

Fears have been raised over a rise in antisocial behaviour in Staple Hill - with police confirming it was 'aware of issues'.

Jess Hayes lives on Riviera Crescent and sent a message to Bristol Live recently, explaining some of the problems that have happened in the area recently.

Avon and Somerset Police has responded, saying it has received reports of damage caused to cars and nuisance behaviour.

Mr Hayes said: "I've got a problem with kids on my road, Riviera Crescent, Staple Hill, keep going up and down my road at night smashing car wing mirrors and attempting to break into garages, the police have been called but have said 'the residents will have to sort it out themselves.'"

However, police have said they are working with South Gloucestershire Council's Anti-Social Behaviour team to take action.

Residents have also been sent letters encouraging them to report anti-social behaviour in the area.

Avon and Somerset Police response

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police has said: "We're aware of issues with anti-social behaviour in Riviera Crescent and the surrounding area in Staple Hill since December 2019. Residents have reported damage to cars and nuisance behaviour involving a group of children."

"The neighbourhood team has increased patrols of the area and has carried out house-to-house enquiries to identify witnesses and suspects. Officers have delivered letters to residents to encourage people to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour.

"The team has identified a number of children aged 12 and 13 as being involved with this group. Officers have spoken with parents and carers and are working with South Gloucestershire Council's Anti-Social Behaviour team to take appropriate action.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Ruth Gawler has been working on the anti-social behaviour that has been taking place in the area.

She said: "We appreciate the impact this is having on the community and the effect on individuals of having their vehicles damaged.

"We'd ask anyone who has witnessed damage taking place or who has footage of the offences to get in touch with us. We do take these issues seriously and it's important to report any incidents to us.

"This help us to target our patrols to be most effective and gain the evidence we need to take appropriate enforcement action."

Cllr Ian Boulton's response

Cllr Ian Boulton represents the Staple Hill ward and Deputy Leader of the Labour Group.

In a message to the public, he said: "If you have a young person in your life please ensure you know that they, and their friends, are somewhere safe rather than being allowed to wander the streets where they can be vulnerable to crime, bullying, exploitation and illegal behaviour.

"Young people are also the age group most likely to become the victims of crime and we all have a responsibility to keep them safe."
