Children as young as 12 could be vaccinated from September

Covid vaccines could be given to children as young as 12 in September, according to reports.

.The move would be part of a project to curb a winter wave of the Covud virus, according to a leaked 'core planning' document.

The Government documents say secondary school children could be vaccinated at the start of the next school year, reports The Sun.

They also suggest everyone over 50 will be offered a vaccine booster jab alongside a flu jab.

A source said: “Plans are in place to vaccinate children aged 12 upwards, and senior government officials have been briefed.

“Though controversial, it is deemed necessary to stop the UK regressing in its remarkable fight against Covid.”

The documents also reportedly reveal that a 'worst case scenario' is being planned, where kids aged just five would be vaccinated from as early as July.

Along with this, extra measures are being considered if the summer lockdown opening leads to a rise in new variants emerging.

Although children are at much lower risk of falling ill from the virus, they can still spread it.

The Department of Health insisted no decisions had yet been made on vaccinating children.

It added: “We will be guided by experts once clinical trials have concluded.”
