Childhood sweethearts from Caldercruix celebrate 60 years of marriage

Childhood sweethearts from Caldercruix are celebrating 60 years of marriage.

Helen and Ian Watson met at the tender age of eight in 1942 and quickly became good friends; romance blossomed when they both attended Airdrie Academy.

Ian left school at the age of 15 to serve an engineering apprenticeship before being called up for National Service with the RAF.

Helen, a farmer’s daughter, went on to work in Caldercruix paper mills as a shorthand typist.

The pair kept in touch and met up whenever possible for a Saturday night at the cinema.

They were married in Caldercruix Parish Church and lived in Currie before moving to Hamilton in 1966 with son William and daughter Kathryn. Helen and Ian are both now in their mid-80s with four grandchildren.

South Lanarkshire Provost Ian McAllan took them whisky and flowers to mark the occasion and Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire John McKenzie presented them with a card from the Queen.
