Childcare worker handed warning after assaulting and injuring kid

An Ayrshire childcare worker has been handed a warning after assaulting and injuring a kid.

Helen Holt was reprimanded after being convicted of the incident at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on May 20, this year.

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) deemed the Saltcoats carer's actions were worthy of a warning that will be on her registration for four years.

Care chiefs said Holt's behaviour had "caused bruising and upset to the service user".

Details of a fitness to practise committee, published earlier this month, outlined the background to the case against Holt.

The watchdog determined that the carer's fitness to practise was impaired because of the "highly serious" conviction.

The dossier reveals that after the incident took place, Holt informed two colleagues about what had transpired. This sparked an investigation from her employer and was subsequently reported to and charged by the police.

Holt pleaded guilty to the charge of assault to injury (child) at the earliest opportunity.

The report states: "As a social service worker, you are expected to uphold public trust and confidence in social services.

"Service users are entitled to feel safe and confident that they can rely on social care workers to remain in control of their behaviour and not to abuse or harm service users.

"Your behaviour posed a serious risk of physical and emotional harm to a young and vulnerable service user.

"In your role as residential worker, you would be expected to role model good behaviour to service users and to form relationships of trust with them. Your behaviour is a highly serious breach of these obligations."

But SSSC chiefs did say Holt had expressed a "a detailed level of insight, regret and apology" and "had a long and unblemished record in social care prior to the incident."

Bosses also believe the assault was an "isolated incident".

Holt's 48-month warning came into effect on October 8.
