Child, two, crushed to death by falling ice sculpture at Luxembourg Christmas markets

A two-year-old child has died after they were crushed by a falling ice sculpture at a Christmas market in Luxembourg.

Police confirmed they have launched an investigation following the incident on Sunday night at around 8pm local time.

Eyewitnesses say the sculpture collapsed near to the ice rink at the Luxembourg City markets shattering as it hit the ground.

The toddler died on their way to the hospital despite the best efforts of paramedics at the scene.

The artist who created the sculpture, which was finished shortly before the incident, said it could not have toppled over on its own, according to the Luxemborg Times.

Police confirmed the incident is being treated as involuntary manslaughter.

Luxembourg prime minister Xavier Bettel said: "It cannot be put into words how sad this makes us. My deepest sympathies and condolences for the family."

The market will remain closed for the rest of the day.
