Child tries to kill herself after horrific sex attack by pervert

A child said that she "wanted to kill herself" after she was subjected to a horrific sexual assault.

Chester Crown Court heard that the teenage victim was taken to hospital after taking a drug overdose in November in an attempt to take her own life.

The court heard how she was found crying at a bus stop shortly after fleeing her attacker.

The victim said that it had taken "far too long" to get justice.

A judge at Chester Crown Court blasted her abuser for 'selfish behaviour' after he was sent to prison for multiple sexual offences.

Lee Bellagamba, 34, of Dover Court, Ellesmere Port, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual activity with a minor after a four day trial in December.

In her victim statement, the victim explained the traumatic impact that the sexual assault has had on her life and how she tried to take her own life.

In a victim impact statement, she said: "This has taken far too long, I have had to wait nine months for justice."

Judge Woodward heard how the victim has been suffering from anxiety and depression following the attacks.

The child said: "I took an overdose in early November and was taken to hospital for two days.

"My life will never be the same again and neither will my family's.

"I just wanted to stop him and make people aware so he couldn't do this to anyone else."

Bellagamba previously denied the two sexual offence charges which date back to 2016, but later admitted his guilt following a trial in December, reports Cheshire Live.

During one of the offences Bellagamba touched the victim's cleavage and breast through her pyjama top.

But it was the second offence which led the victim to report the incident to the police.

"The second offence was much more traumatic for her," said Judge Woodward.

"You had a conservation for about 20 minutes and that conversation got more 'saucy.'

"You asked her if you could touch her breast and she said no, you then grabbed hold of her and tried to kiss her, she ran and was found crying her eyes out in a bus stop."

The harm and psychological impact on the victim and the victim's family was not to be understated, the court heard.

"The impact, psychologically on this young woman, I can't understate the damage you have done to her and her family," the Judge said.

Bellagamba's defence team said he had admitted to the offences and was extremely remorseful for his shameful behaviour.

"The defendant is remorseful," said Mr Tredwell, defending.

"He said that he was fearful in terms of how the court case would impact him and his family.

"He was being regarded as a 'beast' on social media and his car was also damaged after the trial.

"He had admitted to his shameful behaviour.

"It is belated but to give some credit to him, he finally admitted to what he had done because in most cases the perpetrators bury their heads in the sand and say nothing to their dying day but the defendant opened up."

However, Judge Woodward said he believed Bellagamba only admitted his guilt for his own benefit.

He said: "My view is that you are of a person who always puts their own interests first.

"You have admitted these offences, I believe, in the hope that the court would not allow a custodial sentence."

Bellagamba was sentenced to 30 months in prison for sexual assault and sexual activity with a minor.

He was also handed a restraining order which prevents him from contacting the victim and has been placed on a sexual harm prevention order.

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “Bellagamba’s repulsive attacks have clearly had a horrific impact on a young girl who has struggled to come to terms with what happened.

“Sadly, this is not a unique case – and at the NSPCC we see the devastating effects that sexual abuse can have on a child and their family, potentially lasting a lifetime. We hope the girl in this situation is receiving the support and help that she needs, and can take some solace from Bellagamba being brought to justice.

“At Childline’s Great Homer Street base, our volunteers offer counselling sessions to thousands of children every year. We would urge anyone who has experienced abuse, no matter when it happened to contact Childline on 0800 1111, or the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 8005000.”
