Child taken to hospital with suspected broken ankle after being knocked over in Hazlerigg

A child has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Newcastle.

The nine-year-old boy is believed to have suffered a broken ankle following the collision in Hazlerigg.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Tuesday morning shortly after 8.30am.

The road was closed by police while they dealt with the incident and traffic diversions were put in place.

Paramedics transported the boy to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he remains.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 8.40am today (Tuesday) we were contacted by the ambulance service, who were at the scene of a collision involving a car and a child on South View Street, Hazlerigg.

“Officers attended the scene and helped with road closures and traffic diversions while emergency services were in attendance.

“The boy, aged nine, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle and the road has since reopened.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 8:34 to South View, Hazlerigg to a child who had been hit by a car.

"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and transport the patient to the RVI with an injury to his foot."
