An eight-year-old boy has been taken to hospital suffering from critical injuries after being found unresponsive in a car in hot conditions in Melbourne's west, police say.
Firefighters were called to Maddox Street, Newport, near Newport Gardens Primary School, about 2:40pm on Monday after reports of a child trapped in a vehicle.
Police and ambulance also responded to the scene.
One of the boy's parents found the boy, who was unresponsive, police said.
It is unclear how the boy came to be in the car, but the incident was not being treated as suspicious, police said.
The boy was taken to Royal Children's Hospital and is in a critical condition.
It is understood the boy was in a black mini-van parked close to the school on a hot day in Melbourne with temperatures peaking at more than 32 degrees Celsius.
Police said it was protocol to notify homicide squad detectives about the incident but it is not believed to be suspicious.
