Tributes left for girl killed in 'terrible' accident at Melbourne childcare centre

Tributes and messages of support for the girl's family could be seen outside the centre this morning.

Floral tributes and soft toys have been left at a childcare centre car park in Melbourne's north where a three-year-old girl was killed in a "terrible" accident on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Kiddy Palace childcare centre on McDonalds Road in Epping about 4:45pm on Monday following reports a child had been hit.

Detective Sergeant Daryll Out said the girl was killed after she was accidentally struck by a car.

He said the exact circumstances of the incident were still under investigation and he could not elaborate on how it happened.

"We certainly urge anybody who's around children to be very careful and mindful that terrible accidents such as these can occur if everyone's not paying full attention to what they're doing," he said.

Police said a 26-year-old woman had been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle was assisting police with the investigation.

On Tuesday morning, flowers, stuffed toys and letters of support could be seen outside the centre, which remained closed.

A small teddy bear left at the door to the centre held a card that read "spread your angel wings lil' one".

On Monday, shocked people were standing around the scene and onlookers in tears had been interviewed by police.

The SES cordoned off a large section of the car park underneath a tent.

Police forensics were also at the scene and took photos of several cars.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
