Child Star Reflects on Risky Solo Trips to NYC in 90s

Will Friedle bought porn magazines during solo trips to New York City as a child.

In a recent episode of the Hey Dude... The 90's Called! podcast, actor Will Friedle, best known for his role as Eric Matthews in the hit sitcom Boy Meets World, opened up about some interesting aspects of his past. Friedle discussed his early independence as a child and shared stories of his auditions in New York City. At just 11 years old, his busy attorney parents allowed him to make the roughly three-hour bus journey from Avon, Connecticut, to Manhattan on his own.

During these solo trips, Friedle revealed that he engaged in some entrepreneurial activities. Apart from buying cigarettes, he also purchased porn magazines, which he could later sell for a higher price to his friends back in Connecticut. Although this may sound unusual to some, Friedle recounted how the vendors at the kiosks did not hesitate to offer him both cigarettes and adult-oriented magazines, given his young age. The actor humorously remarked that his experiences resembled a 'dark Home Alone 2' situation, evoking memories of the famous film.

Friedle acknowledged that his parents look back on their laissez-faire parenting approach with some mortification. However, he personally views that time with fondness, as it allowed him to experience the vastness of the world beyond Avon.

Despite the lighthearted anecdotes, the podcast episode also delved into more serious topics. Friedle opened up about his struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, discussing how he experienced his first panic attack while filming the 1999 movie H-E Double Hockey Sticks. He shared his initial fear and confusion, thinking he was dying due to the intensity of the symptoms.

In the aftermath, Friedle described spiraling into a difficult period where he found himself unable to get out of bed for weeks. He eventually sought help and began taking medication, which unfortunately caused him to gain around 30 pounds during his time on Boy Meets World.

The actor emphasized how a panic attack changes a person's life, altering their perception of the world and themselves. He expressed gratitude for being able to talk about his anxiety and highlighted the importance of avoiding triggers like social media.

Will Friedle's interview on the podcast sheds light on aspects of his life that may surprise fans. It offers a glimpse into his journey as a young actor, his resourceful entrepreneurial spirit, and his ongoing battle with anxiety. But despite the challenges he has faced, Friedle remains open and grateful, using his experiences to connect with others and navigate his career and personal life.
