Child spat at and abused during 'awful' racially aggravated attack

A young child was spat at during what police have described as an "awful" racially aggravated attack on the outskirts of Nottingham.

Officers were called to reports of the incident in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, at around 3pm on Sunday, March 1.

The victims were approached by a bald white man who had a local accent, before he spat at a child and abused them.

He was wearing a khaki baseball cap, a dark green or brown jacket, blue jeans with a black backpack.

Officers have spoken to the victims and CCTV footage in the area is being investigated.

Superintendent Matthew McFarlane, Nottinghamshire Police’s force lead on hate crime, said: “Racially aggravated public order offences like these are not acceptable.

“This is an awful incident, I fail to comprehend how anyone can abuse and spit at a child like this. Officers are now working hard to try to track down the individual involved.

“Racist incidents will not be tolerated in Nottinghamshire and a lot of work is continuing across the county so we confront issues like these head on.

“If anyone saw the incident or has any information please call 101 quoting incident number 510 of 1 March 2020."
