Child seen wandering streets in Weston alone sparks huge police search

A major police search was sparked after reports of a young child walking the streets alone late at night in Weston-super-Mare.

A concerned member of the public called police at just before midnight yesterday after spotting a young child – estimated to be four or five-years-old– walking alone along Locking Road.

An extensive police search launched to find the youngster, who was seen on the busy route into town by Pizza Hut.

The police helicopter was scrambled and police on the ground conducted an extensive search, carrying out house to house enquiries.

Despite the extensive search, the child was not found.

Police said although they received the call from a member of the public,it had not received any official reports of a missing child.

A police spokesman said: “We received a call from a member of the public at around 11.40 yesterday evening (Wednesday 17 September) regarding concerns for the welfare of a young child that reportedly had been witnessed wandering unaccompanied in the Locking Road area of Weston-super-Mare.

“Officers on the ground conducted an extensive search of the location the child was sighted with support from NPAS (National Police Air Service) but were unable to locate the child.

“No official reports have made to us that a child is missing.”
