Child narrowly missed being hit by car rolling backwards down street

A child had to be snatched to safety after a car started rolling backwards on a pavement.

It happened as a family were walking to school along a sloping street.

Now the headmistress of Houston Primary has put out an alert to all parents.

The pupil was being walked to the school on Friday morning via Back O’Hill.

It’s a popular and designated way of walking to the school via a path.

Head Jennifer Murray wrote to all parents this week and has now asked for police advice.

Back O’Hill is classed as being in the school safety zone.

Concerned: Houston Primary head Jennifer Murray (Houston Primary)

The head is asking drivers to be considerate so they “don’t compromise the safety of our children.”

The letter said: “A parent has been in touch to report that on Friday morning their child narrowly missed being reversed into by a car which had bumped up onto the pavement in Back O’Hill, where the family were walking.

“The car started rolling backwards towards the child and the parent managed to pull them to safety before contact was made.

“Understandably, the family were left quite shaken by the experience.

“Vehicles mounting and manoeuvring along the pavement on a school route should be discouraged at all times.

“I have contacted our community police to seek further assistance with this matter.”
