Child knocked off bike and rushed to hospital after being hit by car

A 13-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car and knocked off his bike.

Emergency services were called to Ullet Road, close to Sefton Park , at around 5.30pm to reports of a crash between a car and a cyclist.

Road closures were quickly put in place between York Avenue and Cheltenham Avenue after the boy was found injured in the road by paramedics.

The boy reportedly suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital a short time later.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that the driver of the car involved had stopped at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

In a statement, the force said: "We were called at 5.30pm to reports of an RTC involving a car and a 13 year-old male cyclist on Ullet Road.

"The road is currently closed between York Avenue and Cheltenham Avenue and ambulance are at scene.

"The boy has suffered a head injury.

"The driver stopped at the scene."

Pictures taken at the scene on Ullet Road show where police have blocked the road in both directions to allow officers to carry out their investigation.

A number of buses have been diverted as a result of the road closure and drivers are asked to find an alternative route.

Merseytravel tweeted: "Due to a RTC, Ullet road is currently closed both ways.

"The Arriva 60 service is being diverted via Lodge lane and Smithdown road."

Arriva North West also tweeted: "Service update 05/11/2019 at 18:00 hours.

"Due to a Police incident on Ullet Road in Liverpool, service 75/76/80/80A are diverting via Smithdown Road in both directions."
