Child hit by car on city centre road and rushed to hospital

A child walking on a city centre road was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car.

Emergency services rushed to Tithebarn Street in Liverpool city centre at around 4pm on Wednesday (September 15) following reports of a child being hit by a car.

Once the force arrived at the scene they found a child had been hit by a Citroen.

The child was rushed to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service. The severity of the child's injuries have not been confirmed.

The driver of the Citroen involved in the crash stopped at the scene and is assisting Merseyside Police with enquiries.

While police dealt with the incident Tithebarn Street was closed to traffic from the junction with Pall Mall and Leeds Street.

Motorists were also advised to avoid the area.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "Emergency services are in Liverpool City Centre following a serious RTC this afternoon, Wednesday 15 September.

"At around 4.05pm, we were called to Tithebarn Street to reports of a collision involving a Citroen and a child pedestrian. The child has been taken to hospital for assessment. The driver stopped at the scene.

"A road closure is in place on Tithebarn Street to Pall Mall and Leeds Street. Please avoid the area.

"If you witnessed the collision, contact us @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 639."

The cordon caused 'heavy traffic' in the city centre according to eyewitnesses and traffic sensors.

One person who was stuck on the road for a while said traffic in the area is "an absolute nightmare" and "extremely congested".

Tithebarn Street was reopened to traffic by 7pm.
