Child fighting for their life after being hit by car on main road

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving after a young pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision.

Emergency services were scrambled to York Street, Heywood, at around 7.45pm last night (Friday February 10) and the road was closed off, near the junction with Hartley Street, for several hours. Photographs taken from the scene show a red Toyota Yaris within the police cordon, with damage to its front.

A 'young child' suffered 'potentially life-threatening' injuries, according to police. Officers are now appealing for witnesses to help with their investigation, as well as CCTV and dashcam footage.

A GMP spokesman said: "Officers were called to the scene at 7.45pm, to reports of a young child, a pedestrian, being hit by a vehicle near to the junction with Hartley Street. Colleagues from NWAS were also on scene to assess the child, who was subsequently taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

"The road was closed for several hours whilst investigations were carried out, before being reopened. The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving whilst the investigation it the collision continues.

GMP are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have CCTV/dashcam footage in the area around the time of the accident, to contact the Serious Collision (SCIU) Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 003102-10022023.
