Child endangerment charges filed against mother of girl, 5, who accidentally shot herself

CHICAGO _ Child endangerment charges have been filed against the mother of a 5-year-old girl who accidentally shot herself in the abdomen in a Chicago West Side home Tuesday evening, police said.

Larrinata Starks, 22, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor child endangerment, police said.

Police said her daughter got the handgun from her mother's purse in a bedroom in the East Garfield Park home around 8:05 p.m., police said.

Her family took her to Rush University Medical Center, about four miles away. She was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.

The girl's grandmother, Oretha Miller, said the child is stable and recovering.

"I'm not doing good. I'm really upset because of what I'm going through with my grandchild," Miller said. "My grandchild has been hurt."

Miller said she planned to spend all day Wednesday at Stroger Hospital. "I'm praying right now for my (grand) child," she said.
