Child dies in drowning tragedy at South Lanarkshire park

A child has died after getting into difficulty in water at a Scots park.

The 11-year-old is believed to have been playing with friends at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, when he fell into the water.

A huge search was launched after the alarm was raised at around 4.30pm on Saturday, July 24.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Locals told how emergency services descended on the park moments after tragedy struck.

One said: “It’s an absolute tragedy.

“The boy was with friends when he fell into the river.

“He was so young - it’s tragic.”

Another said: “I saw all the emergency services speeding down the road and knew something awful had happened.

“The poor family, it’s terrible.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 4.30pm on Saturday, 24 July, 2021 following the report of a concern for person in the water at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park in Stonehouse.

"Emergency services attended and a male youth was recovered from water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Formal identification has still to take place but the family of an 11-year-old boy have been made aware.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
