Child dies after horror crash in Co Down

A child has died after a road traffic collision in Co Down.

The incident occurred on Rowreagh Road, Kircubbin, at around 8.20pm on Monday.

Sergeant Irwin, from the PSNI, said: “Shortly before 8:20pm, it was reported that a young male child was struck by a car in the area. The child was taken to hospital but sadly died as a result of his injuries.

“The Rowreagh Road, which was closed following the incident has since reopened.

“Enquiries are continuing and Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage or any other information to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1696 30/08/21.”

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said: "We received the call at around 8.20 pm with reports of an incident involving a child pedestrian on the Rowreagh Road near Kircubbin.

"We dispatched four rapid response paramedics and two emergency crews to the scene.

"The child was taken the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

In a statement on Monday night, the PSNI said: "The Rowreagh Road, Kircubbin is closed in both directions following a one-vehicle road traffic collision this evening (Monday 30th August).

"Diversions are in place at the Rubane Road and Gransha Road, as motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative main routes."

Leader of the DUP Sir Jeffery Donaldson has shared his condolences with the family.

In a tweet, the Lagan Valley MP said: "Very sad news. Thinking of & praying for this family and all involved."
