Northern Territory police say a child has died in a remote community south-west of Alice Springs after being reported missing from a home.

No information has been given about the boy's cause of death.

Police also did not say which community the boy went missing and was found in.

His exact age was not given but police say the boy was under the age of 10.

They say the boy's family reported him missing after they had searched for him for several hours.

In a statement, police said officers launched a search and rescue effort late on Friday night.

"Tragically, the child was found in the community early this morning and has subsequently passed away," NT Police acting commander Kirsten Engels said.

Police said investigations are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

"We request that the family's privacy is respected at this time and offer our sincere condolences for their loss," acting commander Engels said.
