A 15-year-old boy has died after being hit by a truck outside a regional Victorian school shortly before classes were due to start.
Victoria police on Friday said the teenager, who lived locally, was hit by a truck on High Street in Bendigo at 8.30am.
A passerby attempted CPR but he died at the scene, near Girton Grammar school, a private school for prep to Year 12 students.
The premier, Jacinta Allan, who is also the member for Bendigo East, said she was “deeply saddened by this devastating tragedy”.
“My heart is with the family, loved ones and entire school community who are grieving the loss of one of their own,” she said.
Allan said she had reached out to the principal of the Girton Grammar school to share condolences and “offer any support needed in the days, weeks and months ahead”.
She also thanked emergency services and first responders for their work.
The mayor of Greater Bendigo, Andrea Metcalf, said the community was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young life”.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
The truck driver was not injured and is assisting with the investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash. No charges have been laid.
