A 7-year-old boy died after the boat he was in capsized Wednesday, sending him and eight others into the Chicago River in the South Loop

Crews responded about 6:40 p.m. to a boat flipped over with people in the water near the 1500 block of South Lumber Street, Chicago police said.

The boat appeared to accidentally capsize after being passed by a cargo vessel, police said.

In total, nine people were pulled from the water, officials said.

Victor Lobato was taken to Mercy Hospital where he later died of an apparent drowning, officials said. The boy lived in Little Village, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Witnesses told investigators the boy was wearing a life jacket, police said.

Five others were taken to the University of Illinois Hospital in good-to-fair condition, officials said. Three people refused medical treatment.
