Child airlifted to hospital after 'plunge from high window' onto street

A child was airlifted to hospital after a fall from a high window onto a street below, witnesses say.

Police were called to King and Queen Street in Walworth, South London, at 7.31pm today.

The child, whose gender and age are unknown, was airlifted to hospital 'for assessment', police say.

A witness said they saw the child fall from a window, although this has not been officially confirmed.

London’s Air Ambulance was seen landing in Nursery Row Park just before 8pm, the MailOnline report.

A spokesman for Metropolitan police told MailOnline: "A child fell from height at 1931hrs at an address in King & Queen Street, SE17.

"The child has been taken to hospital for assessment. No crime scene is in place."

It comes days after a toddler was left fighting for her life after she fell 40ft from her bedroom window in a block of flats.

Residents from the building in Portsmouth described how they heard a "massive thud" when the two-year-old girl reportedly fell from her bedroom window.

She too was airlifted to hospital following the 'complete accident' in Portsmouth, Hants, around 6pm yesterday.

Neighbours said her mum was 'hysterical' while her dad rushed to her aid as she lay seriously injured on the street.

Hampshire Constabulary said it is investigating the incident which caused 'life threatening injuries' and officers today carried out enquiries at the scene.

Neighbours said the child's bed in the flat is close to the window, leading to the fall.

Eye witness Emma Reilly, 31, said a metal telephone junction box on the street below the child's window broke her fall and if it wasn't for that the toddler 'would have died for sure'.

Mrs Reilly, who lives in the block, said: "I heard a massive thud from outside and at first I thought someone had been run over.

"But when I looked down from my window I could see the baby lying on the floor.

"I shouted down to her mum because she had obviously been in the bath and had a towel around her head but came to the window to see what the commotion was.

"I shouted 'that's your baby, that's your baby!'. I think her husband had legged it downstairs at this point.

"It was horrible to see."
