Child air lifted to hospital after car smashes into bicycle

A child was air-lifted to hospital this afternoon after a car smashed into a bicycle on a busy main road.

The incident occurred around 3.18pm on Borough Road, Birkenhead , opposite Birkenhead Central Library.

An air ambulance helicopter landed on the car park off Balls Road East and the child was flown to hospital.

Merseyside Police officers were visible examining a silver Mercedes with extensive damage to the windshield.

Borough Road remained cordoned off around two hours after the incident.

A witness said: "The air ambulance landed on the car park. It was a child got knocked off a bike by a car."

Another said: "A young boy been knocked off his pedal bike seems to be in a bad way. The helicopter landed rite outside my home."

Multiple witnesses also described a bicycle ridden by a child being hit by a car.

There are currently no details on the boy's condition, or whether anyone else was injured in the collision.

Merseyside Police have been contacted for comment.
