Child abuse victims to pre-record court evidence

All child victims and witnesses of sexual offences in NSW will be able to have their evidence pre-recorded, instead of appearing in court.

NSW parliament passed a bill on Thursday to expand the Child Sexual Offence Evidence Program to all District Court locations across the state.

The program aims to reduce the stress and trauma experienced by children who give evidence in sexual offence matters, allowing them to complete their testimony at an early stage of the trial.

The government said it expected that more than 140 extra pre-recorded evidence hearings would take place each year as a result of the expansion.

"We want to give children the best chance possible to move on with their lives and not compound the trauma they may already have experienced," Attorney-General Michael Daley said in a statement.
