Child, 8, dies with coronavirus as hundreds more hospital deaths recorded

An eight-year-old is among the 789 people who died with coronavirus in English hospitals, it's been confirmed today (January 21).

Covid fatalities in the South West remain the lowest across the nation, accounting for 43 of Thursday's recorded deaths - which also included a 25-year-old with no underlying health conditions.

The South East confirmed the most deaths with 166, while the Midlands reported 156 and London's stand at 143.

Patients were aged between 8 and 111 years old. All except twenty-eight (aged 25 to 97 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

Date of death ranges from 20 October 2020 to 20 January 2021 with the majority being on or after 17 January.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 by region are as follows:

  • East of England - 97
  • London - 143
  • Midlands - 156
  • North East & Yorkshire - 85
  • North West - 99
  • South East – 166
  • South West - 43

Bristol recorded its joint-highest number of daily deaths yesterday (Wednesday), with a further ten in all settings.

And there were 27 new Covid deaths recorded across Bath and Somerset, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.

Seven further deaths were confirmed in Gloucestershire on January 20.
