Police were called on Thursday after a 44-year-old woman was allegedly driving erratically along Fern Street at Islington about 6pm.

Paramedics and police attended and spoke with the woman, who allegedly returned a positive result to a roadside breath test.

Officers arrested the woman and took her to Newcastle police station, where she was subjected to a breath analysis.

It will be alleged in court that she returned a reading of 0.222.

The 44-year-old was charged with high range drink driving and granted conditional bail.

She is due to face Newcastle Local Court on February 13.

Police said the child was in the care of family members.\
