Child, 3, and parents rescued after two cars submerged by tide on Holy Island causeway

Five people and a dog have been rescued by emergency services after becoming trapped on the Holy Island causeway.

The Coastguard and the RNLI were paged out to the scene on Sunday afternoon and a couple and their three-year-old child had gotten into difficulty attempting to cross.

Water had begun coming through the windows of the car and they were panicked, a spokesman for the Seahouses RNLI said.

Another vehicle had also become trapped with an elderly couple inside.

Paramedics were called as there were concerns about those involved suffering from hypothermia and the help of the Berwick Lifeboat was requested.

Ian Clayton, Lifeboat Operations Manager, said that upon their arrival they managed to wade through the water to the cars with the help of a crew from Holy Island.

The distressed mother, father and toddler were freed from the vehicle along with their doberman dog and taken to safety on the lifeboat.

Mr Clayton added: "The second vehicle had an elderly couple inside and crews stayed with them until the lifeboat could take the three casualties and the dog to shore safely and could turn back around for them.

"They were all handed over to the care of police and the ambulance service.

"It was a very successful operation with all emergency services working hand in hand."
