Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins has lofty goal for 2019 season

Ahead of the 2018 season, the Kansas City Chiefs added free agent receiver Sammy Watkins on a contract that made him one of the top-paid receivers in the NFL. Chiefs Kingdom saw a glimpse of what a healthy Watkins looked like in the Chiefs’ explosive offense, but it didn’t last the length of the season.

An injury wiped out the latter half of Watkins’ season, until the Chiefs’ final game in the playoffs. That has been the story of Watkins’ NFL career up to this point. Tremendous talent hampered by unfortunate injuries. Will Watkins somehow change that narrative during the 2019 season?

He seems to be more motivated than ever to make 2019 the year of No. 14. Check out this tweet that Watkins sent out today:

Watkins wants to be the very best in 2019, and really the Chiefs need him to be the best version of himself this season. Expectations are that teammate Tyreek Hill will be suspended for several games. That means there will be even more pressure on Watkins to step up and be the Chiefs’ top receiver.

This is a pretty profound statement from Watkins about his desire and sacrifice to achieve greatness. He doesn’t just want to be the best in 2019, he “will be the best” in 2019. That’s confidence.

Coming out of college, Watkins was one of the most explosive receivers in the game and was entirely worthy of the Bills taking him with the fourth overall pick in 2014. He just hasn’t lived up to that draft slot, and he’s already on his third NFL team.

Entering his sixth NFL season, Watkins still has a lot to prove. He appears to be willing to put the work in that will help him prove that he’s the best. Can he rise to the occasion in 2019?
