The Kansas City Chiefs are expecting big things from third-year WR Mecole Hardman in 2021.
Hardman has seen opportunities at receiver over the last two seasons due to injuries at the position. His ability to step up and seize the moment has been a mixed bag thus far. With a more permanent vacancy in the offense opening up with the loss of veteran WR Sammy Watkins in free agency, Hardman knows that he’ll be relied upon within the offense.
Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy even said as much during OTAs, explaining that the team will be counting on Hardman and other veterans to step up. Hardman, speaking on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” on Monday, accepted the challenge from his offensive coordinator.
“Man, Coach EB (Eric Bieniemy) knows what he’s got in me,” Hardman said. “I think it’s — people are just blinded by our offense and what we can bring to the table. It’s hard to come into our offense with the best tight end, the best receiver in the game and people expect you to do so many big things. Like, I’m just doing my role, you know what I’m saying? But I think, with Sammy (Watkins) gone and that receiver spot opening up some more, I’ve got all the tools and ability to do what I need to do. I’m definitely going to go in there and be a dog like I am — and when my number is called, take advantage.”

Hardman seems to be of the belief that he’ll have some more opportunities to contribute on offense with Watkins now a member of the Baltimore Ravens. As a rookie, Hardman caught 26 passes for over 500 yards and six touchdowns. He followed it up last season with 41 catches for 560 yards and four touchdowns.
Whether an expanded offensive role for Hardman comes to fruition might depend on how many other hats he wears for the Chiefs in 2021.
