Chiefs WR Marcus Kemp signs exclusive rights free agent tender

The Chiefs will retain one of their top special teams players for another season.

Earlier this offseason the Chiefs tendered wide receiver and gunner Marcus Kemp along with three other exclusive rights free agents. Now, Kemp has officially signed his tender according to the NFL’s official transaction report. That means he’s agreed to the allotted minimum contract which ranges between $570K to $720K depending on credited seasons.

The 23-year-old signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Hawaii in 2017. Kemp spent most of the 2017 season on the practice squad for the Chiefs. He’s been a key developmental piece over the past few seasons.

In 2018, Kemp made the 53-man roster. He appeared in all 16 games, but mostly as a special teams player. He only caught one pass for seven yards on offense. He did accumulate 6 total tackles and downed a few punts within the 20-yard line for the Chiefs on special teams. Kemp also was the emergency safety for the Chiefs during a few games, so he certainly has value for his versatility.

Kemp will likely be in the mix to compete for a depth position among the receivers group again in 2019. Though he’ll likely have some new competition that join the Chiefs in the draft and undrafted free agency.
