Chiefs WR Marcus Kemp ruled out vs. Steelers with knee injury

The Kansas City Chiefs can’t seem to avoid the injury bug this evening.

On the Chiefs’ scoring drive, WR Marcus Kemp made a crucial 27-yard reception on third down to keep the play alive. He came up limping following the play.

Shortly after halftime, Kemp was ruled out of the rest of the game by the team with a knee injury. Though Kemp was able to hobble to the sideline, according to Chiefs team reporter BJ Kissel, Kemp was carted off the field after being evaluated for injury. That’s never a good sign to see the cart come out for a player during the game in any capacity.

Kemp is an important piece for the Chiefs, specifically on special teams. He’s one of the starting gunners and has become a leader for that unit. Recently, he’d made strides on the offensive side of the ball and was working his way into a key backup role. He was in line to make the 53-man roster, but now that is certainly in doubt.

The Chiefs are probably hoping for a sprain here so that they can get Kemp back at some point. Any sort of ligament tears would be absolute worst case scenario here for the Chiefs and for Kemp. This injury differs from the other two the Chiefs suffered this evening in terms of severity. The fact that Kemp was immediately ruled out to return to the game and the others weren’t is telling. This could potentially be an ACL injury, that would knock Kemp out for the season.

The Chiefs may wait to do imaging and testing on Kemp’s knee until they get back to their home facilities, so it’s not clear if we’ll have a significant update on Kemp following the game.
