Chiefs WR De’Anthony Thomas suspended for Week 1 of 2019 season

The Kansas City Chiefs already have one suspended player and will lose another player to suspension.

The team recently resigned WR De’Anthony Thomas and the NFL has decided to suspend him. The suspension will be for one game to start the season for violating their policy on substance abuse. Thomas was arrested in the offseason on marijuana possession charges, but they were recently deferred.

The Chiefs always knew that this was a possibility with Thomas but decided to keep him on the roster anyways. This is the first time that Thomas has been in trouble or suspended by the league.

Thomas rejoined the Chiefs following the injury to stud special teams player and depth WR Marcus Kemp. Thomas can contribute as a kick returner and on the coverage units on special teams. He also has chemistry with the Chiefs as a receiver. He caught several passes from Patrick Mahomes last season before losing his 2018 season to a leg fracture that occurred during practice.

The good news with this decision by the NFL is that the Chiefs will be able to carry an extra player on the 53-man roster to start the season. They’ll need to make room for Thomas in Week 2.
