Chiefs worked out former Patriots draft pick LB Christian Sam

The Kansas City Chiefs brought in another linebacker to work out for the team.

In late September, the Chiefs brought in former Broncos and Kansas Jayhawk Joe Dineen Jr. for a workout. They didn’t end up signing him but it was clear that they were looking at linebackers. Now, the Chiefs reported a workout for former Patriots and Dolphins LB Christian Sam on the NFL’s official transaction report.

Sam played collegiate football at Arizona State and was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL draft. After a strong preseason with the Patriots, Sam was placed on injured reserve and basically had a redshirt season during his rookie year. Sam didn’t make it with the Patriots in 2019 and was released during 53-man roster cuts. Most recently, Sam was signed to the Dolphins practice squad before being released on September 11.

At 6-feet-2 and 240 pounds, Sam has the size and versatility to play all three linebacker spots in a 4-3. He’s shown some coverage ability in the past, but he isn’t exactly the speediest linebacker on the field.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Chiefs just filled their final spot on the practice squad with DT Braxton Hoyett. It’s possible that Sam was in consideration for that spot. This could also be related to the fact that Dorian O’Daniel mysteriously popped up on the injury report with a hamstring injury. It’s possible that the Chiefs are looking at options if they’re forced to place O’Daniel on injured reserve.
