Chiefs wise to wait on free agent safety market

The legal tampering period is off to quite the start.

The Chiefs have stayed mostly quiet throughout this period, with a few rumors of interest flying around, but nothing imminent. Three players have already become the highest-paid at their positions, including one player often connected to the Chiefs, Ex-Giants safety Landon Collins.

Collins’ record-setting contract with the Washington Redskins thrusts him ahead of Eric Berry with six years and a total value of $84 million. While the Chiefs have huge needs in the safety department, there is no way they could possibly pay Collins that deal. Especially on top of the money they’ve already got locked up in the safety position. Even with his skills on the field, and history with new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs are smart to not pay Collins that deal.

There’s a massive group of safeties available in free agency, and the Chiefs could wait for the next wave of signings, and potentially sign a impact player on an affordable contract. Here’s a look at some of the names still out there:

  • Earl Thomas
  • Tyrann Mathieu
  • Tre Boston
  • LaMarcus Joyner
  • Tashaun Gipson
  • Johnathan Cyprien
  • Adrian Amos
  • HaHa Clinton-Dix
  • Kenny Vaccaro
  • Adrian Phillips
  • Darian Stewart
  • Marcus Gilchrist
  • Antoine Bethea
  • Andrew Sendejo

There’s no way that all of these players sign for the same money that Collins just signed. The choice to wait and find value, instead of signing a player to another problematic mega-deal, is one that fans will admire in long run.

Update:

The Chiefs didn’t wait too long though, they’re expected to sign former Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu.
