Chiefs Wire community mock draft roundup

We asked for your best mock draft submissions over on the Chiefs Wire Twitter and Facebook pages this past week and Chiefs Kingdom delivered. Now we have a better idea of the types of players that Chiefs fans are hoping to land in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Below you’ll find a look the position breakdown at pick No. 32 of the 12 mock drafts that we chose to feature:

  • QB: 0
  • OT: 1
  • OG: 0
  • OC: 1
  • RB: 0
  • TE: 0
  • WR: 0
  • DT: 0
  • EDGE: 2
  • LB: 3
  • CB: 5
  • S: 0

The player that was sent to the Chiefs the most frequently in the first round was TCU CB Jeff Gladney, who was selected three times. He was followed by LSU LB Patrick Queen and Iowa EDGE A.J. Epenesa.

My initial reaction is that I’m surprised folks didn’t send more offensive players to the Chiefs early on. They have such a dominant quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, I’m surprised so few want to surround him more weapons. It’s especially surprising to me given the fact that Kansas City will return basically every defensive starter of the 2019 NFL season.

Hit the jump to check out each of our 12 submissions, along with my reactions to their mock draft.

Greg Atkinson’s Mock Draft:

I didn’t give you guys many parameters on my request and left “best” up to individual interpretation. Greg Atkinson went for the best value route and picked up some players that fell in the draft.

Becton is actually a player who could fall in the draft due to a diluted sample at the combine. That would be great value for the Chiefs, as would Niang in the third round. Chinn is my 31st ranked player in this draft class, I know I’m higher on him than most, but I don’t expect him to last past pick No. 50. I am a fan of  Bailey but his injury history is concerning. Closing out the draft with Vildor would be a solid choice, reminiscent of selecting Rashad Fenton in 2019.

Matt Stagner’s Mock Draft:

Our friend Matt Stagner over at Arrowhead Pride shared his ideal mock draft. This certainly feels like a best-case scenario draft for Kansas City. They get a starting CB with inside-out versatility in Gladney. A coverage linebacker in Wilson. Adeniji is a versatile offensive lineman who can play tackle or guard. Hightower is a high-upside receiver that fits the athletic profile the Chiefs like at the position

There’s some recent talk that Edwards-Helaire, his pick in the second round, could be drafted in the first round. Besides that, all of these picks seem slotted in the correct round.

If you haven’t checked out Stagner’s 2019 season in review foreword in the KC Draft Guide, there’s still time to purchase and read it ahead of the draft.

Sam Hays’ Mock Draft:

Queen is a favorite among Chiefs fans. He would really solve a lot of the coverage problems that we’ve seen over the past few seasons with that group. Hall is someone that could have been a first-round pick had he declared a season ago. Biadasz won the Remington Trophy in 2019, but there are mixed reviews on his potential at the next level. I’d expect Johnson to be available at No. 138 over Robertson.

One thing I’ve been hearing is that the NFL is higher on Dotson than the media is. He’s a candidate to be drafted on Day 2 or earlier on Day 3.

Be sure to check out Sam’s work on the PFF Chiefs account and over at the new Sports Illustrated site Chiefs Report.

Kole Berrey’s Mock Draft:

This is a very balanced draft. The Chiefs go defense in the first round getting perhaps the top linebacker in the class behind Isaiah Simmons. Wanogho has the upside to become a starting offensive tackle. Claypool is one of the most intriguing athletes in the class, probably playing move tight end at the next level. They also land an underrated running back in Vaughn. Clark is probably a reserve cornerback or special teamer early in his career, which isn’t bad value in the fifth round.

Clint Driftmier’s Mock Draft

Fulton and Baun would be a dynamic duo in the first two rounds. Baun tested for a diluted sample at the combine, so it’s conceivable that he could fall in the draft. I have a feeling that both Edwards-Helaire and Hunt won’t be available this late, both are getting hyped up to go much earlier in the draft. Garvin is a player that I’m intrigued by given his size and length. He definitely fits the mold that Steve Spagnuolo likes in his edge rushers.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Wyatt McClain’s Mock Draft:

This draft is a bit different from some that we’ve seen so far. It’s the first where offensive players are selected early. He grabs the top interior offensive lineman in the draft in Ruiz, who is just 20 years old by the way. It’s hard to complain about protection for Mahomes and when you’re about to invest a lot of money in a franchise quarterback, you should prioritize it.

I’m not sure that Aiyuk will be available at pick No. 63 but I would welcome the pick. He’d add more speed to the field instantly and give the Chiefs options behind Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson who are scheduled to hit free agency in 2021.

The end of the draft gives you a variety of high-ceiling coverage athletes in Gay, Ojemudia and Brooks. This would be a great haul for Kansas City.

@TomahawkChop25’s Mock Draft

Some people are low on Terrell but I suspect he’ll still go in the first round. This is a little early on Biadasz for me, but two great options at 96 and 138 in Davis-Gaither and Coe. I also think this might be a little high for Olonilua, but I’m definitely a fan of his game. I personally wouldn’t feel too great about this draft right away, but it’s the type that could grow on you in a couple of seasons.

Trask Stanart’s Mock Draft:

This has the potential to be a great draft for Kansas City. Murray in the second round would be a steal. I know some folks have soured on him, but paired with a good coach, he has a very high ceiling because of his athleticism. Lemieux is one of my personal favorite offensive linemen in the draft. Kamara is a great option for a SAM linebacker or situational edge rusher. Edwards-Helaire likely won’t be around at pick No. 96, but I wouldn’t complain if they took a running back there.

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Randi Rodi’s Mock Draft:

Depending on how Epenesa develops at the next level this has the chance to be a pivotal draft. Hall is vastly underrated because of his ankle injury and lack of a senior season. Wilson is one of the top linebackers in this class. Kelley impressed me at the Senior Bowl and still seems to be flying under-the-radar. Williams is a developmental center or right guard, which is a fine choice for the fifth round.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Jason Donnell’s Mock Draft:

The first three picks of this draft are spot on in terms of hitting areas of need. I’m a big fan of Dobbins and his fit with the Chiefs. This might be a little early for Simpson, but I like the thinking of grabbing an offensive lineman before Day 2 is over. Walker is an interesting prospect who made the switch from defensive end to off-ball linebacker. I suspect that Murchison will be off the board in the top 150 picks. He’s seen a lot of pre-draft interest from a variety of teams.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Josh O’Neal’s Mock Draft:

Another Epenesa and Hall combo at 32 and 63. At 96 the Chiefs grab the most athletic TE prospect in the draft in Albert O, who went to school just down the road in Columbia, Missouri. I’m a big fan of Quartney Davis who is a technician at the wide receiver position. That’d be a really good spot to pick him up if they can. Garrett is another player from Mizzou who has some upside as a coverage linebacker.

Mike De Sisti/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel via USA TODAY Sports

Ron Tepper’s Mock Draft:

I think you could get both Baun in the second round and Biadasz in the third round. From what I’m hearing Antonio Gibson could be one of the first running backs off the board On Day 2 because of his versatility as a receiver. You’d probably have to choose between him and Robertson at 96. L’Jarius Sneed is a great developmental corner option for the Chiefs in the fifth round. This draft definitely hits a lot of the needs in Kansas City.
