Chiefs will trade mercurial Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters to Rams

The Chiefs have finalized a trade that will send cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams, two sources confirmed to The Star on Friday.

The trade concludes Peters' three-year run in Kansas City, which was filled with multiple highs _ his two Pro Bowl and All-Pro appearances _ and lows, most of which occurred during a tumultuous 2017 season in which he recorded 46 tackles, five interceptions and nine passes defensed.

Peters remained the Chiefs' best cornerback last season, but he failed to make a Pro Bowl for the first time in his career and found himself at the epicenter of turmoil related to his pregame protests and sometimes-explosive temperament.

In September, Peters' drew criticism when he cursed at a fan during a home win over Washington after surrendering a touchdown. But it was his behavior in the Chiefs' loss to the Jets in early December that led to the first suspension of his NFL career.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs appeared to stop a two-point conversion that would have kept the Chiefs down just five points. But when fellow cornerback Steven Nelson was whistled for defensive holding, Peters _ who was visibly frustrated throughout the game _ picked up the penalty flag and chucked it into the stands, drawing another penalty.

Peters then walked off the field _ escorted by a Chiefs security officer _ even though he had not been ejected. He eventually returned to the sideline wearing cleats but no socks. Chiefs coach Andy Reid suspended him for the next game.

NFL Network reported the 49ers and Browns were also interested in Peters, but a source told The Star on Friday that the Browns were not a major option.

The trade will bring Peters closer to his hometown of Oakland, Calif., where Peters regularly spends his offseason.
