Chiefs waive RB Josh Caldwell, sign TE Manasseh Garner

The Kansas City Chiefs made a late night roster move on Monday and it won’t be a popular one.

On Saturday, one of the standouts during the preseason debut against the Cincinnati Bengals was undrafted free agent and Lee Summit, Missouri native Josh Caldwell. He was the top rusher during the preseason-opening win with four attempts for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Now, Caldwell will be looking for work as the Chiefs have opted to waive him from the squad. In a corresponding move the Chiefs signed veteran TE Manasseh Garner, who most recently spent time with the Washington Redskins in 2019. They announced the move on Twitter.

If Garner sounds familiar, that’s because he’s been a member of the Chiefs before. In fact, Kansas City was the first team that Garner spent time with as an undrafted free agent following the 2015 NFL draft. Garner signed with the team as a fullback, but he was only with the team until May.

Since then, Garner has been with the Browns, Bills, Broncos and most recently the Redskins. He tore his ACL at the beginning of last preseason and spent the entirety of 2018 on injured reserve. The 27-year-old returns to the Chiefs having recorded no statistics in the regular season.

The move to sign Garner has to make you wonder if the Chiefs expect John Lovett to miss significant time with his separated shoulder. Garner has a similar skillset to Lovett and fills that H-back role in the NFL. His size is also similar to Lovett, most recently listed at 6-2 and 240 pounds with the Redskins.

Caldwell was a longshot to make the roster, but this one certainly feels a little bittersweet after he just had his moment in the spotlight. Perhaps he’ll catch on elsewhere soon.
