Chiefs waive CB Michael Hunter with injury settlement

The Kansas City Chiefs have released a cornerback from their injured reserve with an injury settlement.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have waived Michael Hunter from their injured reserve list with an injury settlement. This means that he’ll become a free agent if he clears waivers and will be free to sign with another team.

Hunter joined the Chiefs as a free agent just ahead of preseason Week 1. He occupied the vacancy left by Keith Reaser when he suffered an Achilles injury during training camp and Tremon Smith when he was switched from CB to RB. Hunter had previous experience working with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State in 2016 and joined the New York Giants. Spags was still the defensive coordinator with the Giants at that time.

During the preseason, Hunter played in just one game for the Chiefs against the Cincinnati Bengals. He performed admirably during that game on limited practice time, recording four tackles, one pass defended and an interception. Hunter appeared on the injury report following the Chiefs’ 14th training camp practice with a groin injury. He ultimately never returned to action for the team.

Hunter wouldn’t have been able to return from injured reserve and play with the Chiefs this season anyway, as he was not on the initial 53-man roster. He was waived with an injury designation during roster cuts, which is why he reverted to injured reserve.
