Chiefs waive CB Jalin Burrell with non-football illness designation

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a roster move.

According to the NFL’s transaction report the Chiefs have waived undrafted free agent cornerback Jalin Burrell. Burrell played college football for the University of New Mexico Lobos, and joined the Chiefs following the 2019 NFL draft.

Burrell was waived with the non-football illness designation. What that means is that something not related to football kept him from seeing the field, in this case an illness. Think back to Mike Catapano, who contracted some sort of gastrointestinal virus, which landed him on the NFI list during football season.

It’s a real shame that Burrell is dealing with an illness at this juncture. He was one of the standout players with the Chiefs during their rookie minicamp. He earned some high praise from the defensive coaching staff and seemed to be coming along nicely.

If Burrell clears waivers he’ll land back on the NFI list for the Chiefs. He’ll remain there until the Chiefs choose to activate him or reach a settlement on his contract. He likely won’t get to continue building on his successes until later this offseason at the earliest.

This move opens up a roster spot on the 90-man for one of the six players the Chiefs have at their mandatory minicamp on a tryout basis. If they’re looking to replace Burrell, look for the Chiefs to add Boston College CB Hamp Cheevers in his place.
