Chiefs waive 2018 sixth-round pick OL Kahlil McKenzie

The Kansas City Chiefs have opted to waive a former sixth-round pick by the team in 2018.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport the Chiefs will release OL Kahlil McKenzie. The team moved up in the sixth-round of the 2018 draft to select McKenzie, a former defensive tackle, and convert him into an offensive lineman.

McKenzie spent the entire 2018 season on the Chiefs active roster, but wasn’t active for any of the games. He essentially took a redshirt season with the Chiefs that year. There were hopes that he’d develop and be prepared to play this season, but that was not the case.

This offseason, McKenzie spent his time in Kansas City working with Hall of Fame guard and Chiefs legend  Will Shields. The team drew attention to this in their documentary series, “The Franchise.” If McKenzie clears waivers he’ll likely be wanted back with the team on the practice squad as he continues to develop. The talent is there, but with so little experience at the position, it’s clear he needs more repetitions.

McKenzie is the son of former Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, who currently works in the front office for the Miami Dolphins. That’s a spot to watch for him as he goes through waivers.
