Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: NC State LB Isaiah Moore

A tight end and linebacker at Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Virginia, Moore was one of the top-ranked linebacker prospects coming out of the state of Virginia in 2017. He was a team captain as a senior, posting a dominant 106 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, three interceptions and five blocked kicks.

The performance earned him offers from half a dozen schools including Old Dominion, Army, Navy, UTSA and Coastal Carolina. He ultimately chose to commit to NC State and head to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Fit with the Chiefs

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs have one of the most talented linebacker corps in the NFL, which will be difficult for any new additions to crack. Moore has the pedigree as a three-time team captain and a highly-productive player at NC State.

On the defensive side of the ball, Moore is highly intuitive when playing downhill, boasting a quick trigger and quickness to boot. He’s an absolute terror when blitzing the quarterback, showing a good feel for timing and wrapping around. In terms of coverage, you’ll probably not see him matched up in man coverage too frequently, but he’s got a penchant for zone coverage drops and squeezing throwing lanes. Ultimately, he’s got two-down linebacker ability with some upside for more.

Like any undrafted free agent, Moore must earn his keep on special teams to make the 53-man roster. He’s already caught the attention of special teams coordinator Dave Toub, but he’ll likely need to beat out last year’s undrafted free agent signing in Jack Cochrane. Versatility will also be part of the picture here too. Moore is likely looking at a backup role as both MIKE and SAM.
