Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu familiar with Buccaneers coaching staff

Kansas City Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu gets to face off against some familiar opponents in Week 12.

Mathieu, of course, came into the league as a third-round draft pick with the Arizona Cardinals back in 2013. His head coach for the next five seasons would be none other than current Buccaneers HC Bruce Arians. His defensive coordinator from 2013-2014 was Todd Bowles.

Mathieu appreciated both of those coaches for believing in him. He had some tumultuous times at LSU that ended in his dismissal and questions heading into the 2013 NFL draft. Mathieu also credits them for the early development in his professional career.

“Bruce Arians is a straight shooter,” Mathieu said. “I love him. You know, he was actually the guy that took a chance on me and drafted me and really believe in me from Day 1. He’ll always be one of my favorite coaches and I think Todd Bowles helped me out so much. He’s so smart and I think me coming into the NFL, being able to play multiple positions, I really feel like he helped me out a lot early on in my career.”

Both Arians and Bowles are in their second seasons as head coach and defensive coordinator with the Buccaneers, respectively. This year they turned a new page by adding former New England Patriots QB Tom Brady to the mix. His presence alone has elevated the play on both sides of the ball.

Mathieu will be ready for anything that comes his way in this game. His familiarity with the tendencies of the head coach and defensive coordinator is something he’ll be able to lean on in the game. One thing you can tell heading into this game, the competitor in Mathieu is set to come alive.

“Just looking forward to seeing those guys this weekend,” Mathieu continued with a smile on his face. “Hopefully, you know, play my best game and get a win.”
