ST. JOSEPH, Mo. _ Chiefs quarterback Tyler Bray suffered a small chip fracture in his cervical spine, the team announced after Monday's practice.
"It sounds much worse than it is," Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said. "We're treating it as a sprain, because it's just like that."
Burkholder said Bray saw two orthopedic surgeons and had X-rays and an MRI on Sunday.
"Once his symptoms go away, and those symptoms are a stiff neck, and as a thrower he has to turn his head and get his hands above his head, we think he's going to be fine," Burkholder said.
"We'll monitor him day to day and see how he does. There's no real timetable when he'll return, but we think he'll be fine to return."
Bray suffered the injury late in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks when he was slammed to the ground.
Bray was the third quarterback to play on Saturday. The two quarterbacks who played after Bray _ Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan _ received more reps in Monday's practice.
Running back Charcandrick West missed Monday's practice with after suffering a left elbow injury on Saturday.
Burkholder described the injury as a mild elbow strain.
"He damaged the muscle and a little bit of stretch of the ligament," Burkholder said. "He's literally day to day."
West fell on his outstretched arm and felt fine after the game, Burkholder said. But the elbow was swollen and stiff on Monday.
