Chiefs training camp, 7/28/19: Recap, reactions

The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up their second training camp practice on Sunday.

Today was a season ticket member practice and they had their annual pancake breakfast for season ticket members. Clark Hunt, Mark Donovan and several other Chiefs executives cooked and mingled with fans.

Today’s practice was a bit cooler, starting early in the day. It also didn’t quite have the intensity of the first practice. Players and coaches are still getting into the swing of things before the pads come on this week.

Check out the injury report, twitter recaps and observations from practice down below:

Injuries

There were two hamstring injuries throughout the course of practice. A second safety went down, as Jordan Lucas tweaked a hamstring at some point in practice. First string running back Damien Williams also had some soreness in his hamstring and the Chiefs pulled him just to be cautious. Neither issue appears to be serious, so that is at least good news. It also provided some valuable repetitions for the newer players on the team.

Observations from Wesley & Nick Roesch

  • Sammy Watkins caught several passes, including multiple leaping catches in traffic. He also caught a deep ball while being wide open after a blown coverage. He did have a drop, but did more than enough to make up for it.
  • With Hill, Watkins and Hardman as locks to make the roster, it appears that Robinson, Pringle and Dieter have the early advantages to round out the receiving corps. Marcus Kemp is getting valuable reps as well.
  • When Damien Williams left practice with a hamstring injury, Carlos Hyde ran with the first team offense. Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson split second and third team reps.
  • As obvious as this may seem, Patrick Mahomes has looked like his MVP self. His throwing accuracy has been near perfection and he is spreading the ball around to all his playmakers. It’s easy to tell how comfortable he is as the leader of this team and how far he’s come since last year’s training camp.
  • With Bashaud Breeland out, D’Montre Wade continues to run with the first team defense and is holding his own.
  • Juan Thornhill dropped an interception for the second straight day, but it’s encouraging that he’s putting himself in position to make those plays.
  • Dorian O’Daniel had an impressive interception over the middle during a two-minute drill.
